Dutch American culinary team to be certified by Alaska Seafood University

Cruise Line Holland America works with Alaska Seafood to educate 2,500 team members about Wild Alaska Seafood through the SeafoodU® training course.

Six culinary team members Netherlands United States Line The ship will become Alaska Seafood University Certification This year.

Alaska is the largest wild seafood in the United States and through Seafood you Educational courses for members of the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI), HAL’s catering and kitchen team will demonstrate their understanding of Alaska seafood species, responsible fishing practices and health benefits.

Seafood U provides education on a variety of seafood, health benefits, fishing methods and overall sustainability practices that supply more than 60% of the country’s wild seafood.

To prepare for the 2024 Alaska season at the Cruise Line, the Dutch American culinary team started Seafood U training earlier this year. About 2,500 members of the onboard team on the six ships are expected to complete the course.

Netherlands and the United States are committed to sustainable seafood

Alaska seafood has long been a trait of Hal’s immersive culinary experience and dedication to sustainability. On each Alaska cruise, the company will serve two thousand pounds of Alaska salmon, one thousand pounds of Alaska cod, eight hundred pounds of Alaska halibut, and five hundred pounds of Alaska rock fish. Guests can choose from a variety of Alaska seafood delicacies, such as roasted fennel-rotted Alaska halibut or Alaska salmon salad.

Dutch United States Line Received Responsible fishery management (RFM) certified all six vessels of all its Alaska-bound vessels in 2022, the first to achieve this prestigious qualification by serving only certified sustainable and traceable wild Alaska seafood cruise ship.

Most consumers prefer wild seafood

According to the Alaska Seafood Marketing InstituteWild seafood is usually the first choice for 4:1, and its products are clearly marked as wild, especially those with the Alaska seafood logo, which is more attractive to customers. While the vast majority of consumers want a sustainable diet, over three-thirds of every five Americans are uncertain which seafood is sustainable and what.

Sustainable Fishing in Alaska writes it into its constitution

Seafood in Alaska includes five species of wild salmon, cod, halibut, wild Alaska Pollock, stingray, rock, single/flounder, crab and more – available year-round.

Alaska is the only state to write sustainable fishing into its constitution, and the Alaska seafood industry goes out of its way to ensure they harvest only what the environment can support.

The state leads the definition of global standards for preventive resource management, protecting fisheries and surrounding habitats for future generations, and ensuring a sustainable supply of wild seafood to global markets.

ASMI is a partnership between Alaska and the Alaska seafood industry that promotes the benefits of wild and sustainable Alaska seafood, while also providing seafood business education. The fishing industry in Alaska is the state’s largest basic private sector employer, accounting for more than 60% of all wild seafood in the United States and 99% of wild salmon harvested in the United States.
