'Zootopia 2' beats 'Minecraft' movie to become new domestic box office king in 2025

Zootopia 2 Minecraft has officially reached a new box office milestone, surpassing the Minecraft movie to become the highest-grossing domestic film of 2025. This latest achievement solidifies the sequel's dominance as the most successful film of the year in the U.S. market.

Since its record-breaking Thanksgiving debut, Disney's animated sequel has been a theatrical juggernaut, shattering nearly every box office record in 2025, including top-grossing film internationally ($1.425 billion) and top-grossing film worldwide ($1.85 billion). However, the top spot in North America remains elusive, with Minecraft: The Movie leading by a slim margin of $424.08 million. Now, after spending 13 consecutive weeks in the domestic top 10, Zootopia 2 has officially jumped to No. 1 with a total of $424.2 million.

2025 has been a record-breaking year for Disney, marking its most successful theatrical release since pre-pandemic. The resurgence has been fueled by three billion-dollar blockbusters: “Zootopia 2,” the live-action “Lilo and Stitch” and “Avatar: Fire and Ash.” Together, this powerful trio has propelled Disney's global ticket sales past the $6 billion mark.

Nearly ten years after the original, “Zootopia 2” made a strong comeback, breaking a record with a global box office of $559 million in the five days of Thanksgiving. This massive release is not only the best start ever for an animated film; It also became the fourth-biggest global debut in film history, behind only “The Avengers” and “Spider-Man.”

Thanks to rave reviews and incredible word-of-mouth, the sequel became the fastest PG-rated film to hit $1 billion at the box office, reaching the milestone in just 17 days. Since then, it has officially surpassed “Inside Out 2” to become the highest-grossing animated movie of all time, and even surpassed “Avengers 4: Endgame” to become the highest-grossing MPA movie in China's history.
