Wizz Air says diversification is driving its continued growth in the Macedonian market, with the low-cost carrier moving beyond traditional expatriate transport to offer a wider range of leisure, city break and regional routes. Speaking to EX-YU Aviation News, Wizz Aviation Network Officer Andras Szabo said: “Macedonia is very close to our hearts. It is a market that we highly appreciate. We see strong growth momentum in Macedonia as we add aircraft and upgrade existing aircraft from A320 to A321 Macedonia has started to expand significantly at the end of last year. This growth is coming from multiple types of travel. We are launching more routes aimed at leisure and urban short-haul transportation, and we do see demand for them. Some of them are bolder options, such as Spanish routes, but we see that there is demand.”
Wizz Air has driven growth at Macedonia’s two international airports to record levels this year. From January to April, the airport received a total of 852.573 passengers, an increase of 55% compared with the same period last year. In the first half of 2026, Wizz Air's available seats in the country increased by 66.4%, or 623,560 seats.
Mr Saab noted: “Macedonia is marketing new flights vigorously and both airports and countries are working with us to develop routes. We are also exploring different intra-Balkan routes, which we started with Ljubljana a few years ago. At the same time, we do not want to forget about routes to Italy, which The lines are actually multi-purpose. I wouldn’t say they are just expat routes because there is also outbound travel and the best word for that route servicing inbound travel is diversification, and Macedonia remains close to our heart.”
TAV Macedonia, operator of Skopje and Ohrid airports, participated in the European Route Development Forum held in Rimini last week and held meetings with numerous airline partners. The airport operator has identified Helsinki and Amsterdam as key network targets, while also highlighting the wider Scandinavian market as an area with huge growth potential.
