Wizz Air announced the closure of its base in Vienna after a “strategic review of its business and fleet allocation.” The move will result in the termination of four routes from the Austrian capital to the former Yugoslav market, including Pristina, Podochrika and Ohrid. The low-cost carrier will begin its presence in Vienna on October 26, when two of its five stationed aircraft were withdrawn, resulting in the suspension of two routes. The knockout round will end on March 15, 2026, dismantling the remaining three aircraft and canceling the Wizz Air's Vienna network, which includes four affected destinations in the former Yugoslavia
Wizz Air currently operates eight flights per week between Vienna and Pristina. After the suspension of the route, Austrian Airlines will remain the only operator between the two cities. The low-cost carrier will also move to Podgorica four times a week, and once the air is evacuated, it will leave it exclusively for the Austrians. Likewise, Ohrid will lose contact with Vienna, and currently the Wizz Air operates four times a week. Flights between Vienna and Tuzla are only held in June this year, twice a week, will be suspended on October 25 but will resume on March 29, and the route is operated by its Tuzla-based aircraft.
Wizz Air launched its Vienna base in 2018 and currently operates 28 routes to 20 countries, a fleet of five Airbus A321NEO aircraft. “Air costs and taxes have increased significantly since Wizz Air's Vienna base was established,” said Wizz Air Air Air Air Air Air Air Air Air Air. “The airline's strategy focused on establishing core markets in Europe and the East and made Vienna's operations inconsistent with cost discipline, thus becoming inconsistent with the airline's ultra-low cost-cost business model.” The airline recently announced its opening at its base near Bratislava on November 14, which could lead to some affected route transfers.
