The ‘Wedding Cake’ House is the National Archives – Scharloo District

Shahru Neighborhood

On the other side of the Waigat River is the ever-changing district of Salu. It was once a neighborhood of wealthy Jewish businessmen with villas and mansions, but by the 1980s it had been abandoned and turned into chaos. Thankfully, a local initiative is sparking a creative renaissance of historic buildings. There is a lot of street art and murals that brighten up the neighborhood.

For example, The Kibrahacha Tree located on the corner of Van Raderstraat is a famous tree. This is the only tree growing on ABC Island. There are other incredible murals on display in the parking lot near Bitterstraat.

Many of the derelict mansions in the Scharloo neighborhood have been restored and maintained as monuments. My favorite is the green and white “wedding cake” rococo mansion currently used as the National Archives.

One of my favorite places for nightlife in the Caribbean (along with San Juan, Puerto Rico) is Willemstad. The town is filled with vibrant lights and music. The Queen Emma Boardwalk takes on a rainbow of colors as music echoes across the water.
