Summer is a magical time in Cornwall. The banks of the Helford River are heavily wooded and lush, forming a dark green tapestry that winds its way to the water's edge. Tucked away among the creeks, you'll find one of Britain's rare temperate rainforests – lush ancient woodland that thrives thanks to the mild summers, wet winters and the area's coastal climate.
This unique landscape – where ancient oak forests meet tranquil waterways – brings a softer, more tranquil side to Cornwall. It's a haven for birds such as herons, egrets and kingfishers, while the river itself (technically a flooded valley formed after the Ice Age) is home to more than 80 species of fish. On a calm day, look closely and you may spot them scurrying beneath the surface.
Keep your eyes open for the occasional seal or even dolphins swimming in the deeper waterways. Helford has a mix of saltwater and freshwater, providing the perfect environment for a variety of wildlife.
Why don't you come and see what you can do at Helford River Cruise This summer?
heron
The majestic Gray Heron, with a wingspan of up to 195cm, is the real highlight of Helford. Their colorful bills and legs are easy to spot as they hunt along river banks—just watch for nesting areas along Polvera Creek.
A gray heron (Ardea cinerea) soars gracefully over tranquil water, its broad wings fully extended, showcasing the bird's impressive wingspan.
little egret
Equally captivating are the Little Egrets, whose bright white plumage has lit up our skies since arriving in large numbers in 1989. Whether migrating or staying year-round, they are a delight against the backdrop of ancient oak trees.
kingfisher
Kingfishers have brilliant blue and tawny wings and are even rarer in spring. They are usually busy nesting on river banks and may appear more frequently in autumn, but don't lose hope; a brief glimpse is always a special treat.
cormorants and cormorants
Just like along St Agnes, keep an eye out for cormorants and cormorants around Helford. These agile birds often use nearby buoys as drying spots after successful dives, demonstrating their impressive underwater skills.
snipe
Listen to the haunting calls of curlews as they blend into the tranquil coastal backdrop, their long, curved bills contrasting with their mottled feathers.
oyster catcher
Although there are plenty of oysters in the Helford River for these birds to catch, they prefer to eat mussels and cockles. Its distinctive red beak, pink legs and black and white feathers make it a stunning bird, and its distinctive high-pitched call means you sometimes hear it before you see it.
Ordinary seals
Although seals are not permanent residents of Helford, these playful, curious creatures can often be seen following a fish or even a fishing boat, adding an extra layer of excitement to your cruise.
dolphin
Dolphins have been seen playing near Treba Gardens Beach on several occasions over the past few years, and on one occasion a customer pointed out a fin in front of Frenchman Creek. “A shark,” she said. I laughed, there were no sharks, but then there were dolphins! This beautiful aquatic mammal belongs to the suborder Cetacea. Highly intelligent, social and charismatic animals we are delighted to see when we encounter them on our boat trips, so keep your eyes peeled!
fish
There are more than 80 species of fish in the Helford River, including mackerel, perch, snapper, pilchards and pilchards. On calm days, especially if you're wearing polarized sunglasses, you may have luck spotting them more easily, especially along creeks.
Smaller fish are often seen leaping out of the water and being chased by larger things below the surface. It’s also bluefin tuna season, a relatively new and exciting development for Cornwall. These impressive fish are huge, larger than the average dolphin, and we had an amazing sighting at Trebah Beach last fall.
So, stay alert – you never know what you might find. One woman even thought she saw a shark when a fin glided in the water near a creek. It turns out to be a dolphin!
