I live in Washington, D.C., and graduated high school here, but have never seen flowers. I've been back at least 30 times since then, last year I missed them for a few weeks because we went straight from carnival in new orleans. This year it looks like I’m going to reach my peak!

Where is the best place to enjoy flowers?
The Tidal Basin is located in front of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial and behind the Washington Monument. It is the location for postcard (old-time Instagram) photos. Image surrounded by soft pink petals.
You can download a free walking map which explains the monuments you will see on the walk, as well as information about the various flowering trees, as there are not only cherry blossoms here.
Start at the MLK Memorial on West Basin Drive and follow the flowers and crowds! A good tip is to get here as early as possible, such as at sunrise, if you want to take photos.

Dumbarton Oaks Spring in Georgetown comes alive after a dreary winter (I know this because I got there so early when only the crocuses were in bloom). The beautiful garden has corners and statues that make for lovely photos. This is a paid attraction. There is also a museum here.

So how do you know when to go?
You can follow the live bloom tracker Sakura watchthey show a real-time timeline of when buds are dormant, awakening, green buds, and florets visible—all the way through peak bloom and fall.
When I saw it today, it said “small flowers visible” and based on that data, they were showing four local sites predicting that peak flowering in 2026 would be between March 30th and April 7th. Luckily, I arrived on April 7th!

Where can I stay within walking distance?
Firstly, remember that flowering dates are all weather related, so my advice is to book a refundable or moveable hotel on a similar website Booking.com. However, if you're from the other side of the world like me, choosing a few nights between average dates will still ensure you see at least some flowers.
The Tidal Basin is within walking distance of the Marina Hotel (I stayed at the Intercontinental last time and it was great).
five star salamander washington If you don't like walking too much to take photos of flowers, this is the closest hotel. It will cost you a few bucks, though.
five star Sofitel Lafayette Square Located near the White House, you can walk about 2.2 miles to the MLK Monument. Please wait 30 minutes or take a taxi.
Last time we visited we stayed at Marina InterContinental. It is ideally located 1.4 miles from the Tidal Basin, a 30-minute walk away. There are plenty of cute places to eat and drink here too, including rooftop igloos (below).
Next time I wanted more walkability near some museums and the White House, so chose the Sofitel Lafayette and purchased a two-day hop-on hop-off bus pass to allow us to tour the vast grounds of Washington, D.C.'s museums and monuments. People always underestimate the distance!
