What's in my carry-on (and why it matters) – Premier Wellness Travel

Earlier this winter, I had the privilege of walking into the studio “Good Morning Washington” on WJLA-TVThe 8th largest market in the United States, shares something seemingly simple but crucial to me (and my clients): how we travel, and how we show up when we travel.

I talked about the things I carry with me.

It’s more than just a bag filled with essentials. This reflects the way I approach travel and life in general. Each item is thoughtfully designed not only for convenience, but also for balance, health and ease on the move. I like to joke that this is my Mary Poppins bag, you never know what little magic you're going to pull off next.

For me, flying is not an easy thing to endure. They are opportunities to pause, reset and recharge. They give me time to clear out mental clutter and prepare mentally, physically, and emotionally for what’s next.

Over the years I’ve developed some thoughtful rituals to make this possible. I brought items to help me rest, nourish, and refresh myself. I choose clothes that are both comfortable and sophisticated so I can feel put together without sacrificing comfort. No matter how far away from home I am, I incorporate little personal details that keep me grounded.

These choices are guided by what I call the GRIST philosophy, or “Five Anchors.”

first is grounda beautiful piece of familiarity that settles the body. It’s not about style, it’s about physical comfort that my nervous system perceives as safe and calm, even in a busy airport.

followed by ceremonyan object or habit that marks transition and creates continuity. Ritual transforms movement into meaning and tells the body that we are bound, even as we move between worlds.

The third is indulgencecarefully selected little sensual luxuries. Luxury is not luxury; It’s a calibration, a joy in recovering without being overwhelmed.

The fourth is supportanything to prevent micro-stress and decision fatigue. Ease is often created by subtraction, and the things you don't have to think about matter.

The fifth is touchstonea familiar little thing—a smell, a texture, or something of personal significance—that keeps you from feeling anchored in an unfamiliar place.

With these anchors in mind, here are some of the items I carry with me.

A soft scarf helps me stay grounded and brings a sense of calm and stability no matter where I am.

My travel journals, traveler prayers, and perfumes serve as rituals, marking transitions and creating continuity, transforming movement into meaning.

Cashmere socks, chocolates at home and a diffuser are my little indulgences, sensual luxury that brings pleasure without going too far.

I carry supplements, ointments, and gua sha tools to provide support and help me manage stress, care for my body, and maintain balance on my journey.

Ultimately, crystals are like a touchstone, a familiar object that keeps me oriented, centered, and connected even in unfamiliar places.

Each item is small and carefully selected to rejuvenate, rather than drain, the travel experience.

Traveling with a purpose means more than just packing smartly. It’s about being fully present, taking care of yourself along the way, and creating space to enjoy the journey itself.

Luxury is more than staying in a five-star hotel or taking a private transfer. True luxury is the feeling you get when you step off the plane, ready to go about your day with energy, clarity and peace. No matter where you are in the world, arrive at your destination fully prepared and fully yourself.

This philosophy guides every journey I design for my clients. From your itinerary to the smallest details in your carry-on luggage, every choice matters. Each element can transform a trip from an exhausting affair into a rejuvenating and inspiring experience. Taking the time to think about what you’re bringing and how you’re traveling can make all the difference.

Next time you're packing for a trip, consider what you're packing not just for practicality, but for comfort, balance, and happiness.

Consider rituals that will help you rest and be healthy, so you can arrive at your destination feeling oriented, grounded, and engaged.

Travel is more than where you go. It’s about how you show up when you get there, and how the experience prepares you to return to life renewed and inspired.

If anything here resonates with you, either while reading or watching the clip, I'd love for you to leave a comment. This is indeed important and it means a lot to hear from you.
