Uber to offer self-driving cars cruising on its platform

Uber plans to offer Cruise self-driving cars on its platform starting next year, the company announced Thursday. The deal includes a “dedicated number” of Chevrolet Bolt-based self-driving cars.

Uber said that when the service launches, “when Uber customers request an eligible ride on the Uber app, they may choose to have that trip completed by a Cruise self-driving car.”

According to Uber, as of June 2024, Cruise has resumed supervised autonomous driving in Phoenix, Houston and Dallas, in addition to ongoing testing in Dubai.

GM's self-driving car unit yesterday resolved a nearly two-year NHTSA investigation into “panic braking” issues by recalling nearly 1,200 self-driving taxis to install new software to improve perception. The company has been under active investigation by the Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission since October, when one of its self-driving taxis struck a pedestrian in San Francisco. A study published in June by New Scientist magazine concluded that self-driving cars are safer than human-driven cars, except in certain lighting conditions and when turning.
