IMG leader Max Bond reports that the team has marked the summit of Africa and has now safely descended to Mweka Camp. They left Camp Barafu at midnight and reached Stella Point on the edge of the crater at dawn.
From there, it’s another half-hour hike around the crater to reach the pinnacle of Uhuru Peak. Max reported that the weather was cold and sunny and they were happy to have their warm parkas.
The descent to Mweka Camp took a day, with the team following 9,000 feet of gravel, rock, and rugged trail to reach treeline at approximately 10,000 feet. The plan for tomorrow is to start early, finish the last few hours of hiking, get down to Mweka Gate, celebrate and tip their Chagga staff. They will then return by minibus to their hotel in Moshi for showers, beers and a barbecue dinner. Well done, team!
