Why these flights are important
Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport It remains the busiest airport in the Caribbean Basin and one of the most convenient destinations for U.S. travelers traveling to the region.
Adding routes from cities like Buffalo, Richmond and Norfolk expands island coverage beyond the largest traditional gateways. Starting this spring, travelers to these areas will now have direct access to Puerto Rico’s beaches, historic neighborhoods and growing hotels.
The timing also coincides with the continued growth of tourism in Puerto Rico. San Juan continues to attract visitors seeking a Caribbean getaway, with its blend of beaches, historic neighborhoods and dining options ranging from street stalls to exquisite tasting menus. The city's ease of access to the mainland U.S. — U.S. citizens don't require a passport and flights from many cities are short — have kept demand strong.
Extra air freight tends to ripple through the island's tourism economy. More direct routes make quick travel easier, encourage long weekend trips, and introduce destinations to travelers in cities that previously required connecting flights.
What to do in San Juan
San Juan balances beach time with urban energy, with most visitors dividing their time between the coastline and the historic center.
Condado and Isla Verde are the backbone of the city's beach area. In Condado, a long strip of sand meets Ashford AvenueThere, hotels, restaurants and cafes are just steps away from the water. Isla Verde is relatively close to the airport, has wide beaches, stable trade winds and many large resorts.
Dining has become one of San Juan's biggest draws. Metropolitan area restaurants reinterpret Puerto Rican classics and global cuisine. You will find traditional plates such as mofongo, Roast suckling pig and Aroz Kangandulus You can find them everywhere from casual roadside kitchens to fine dining restaurants.
The city's nightlife is equally colorful. Condado's cocktail bar serves rum punch and tropical classics, while venues throughout the metro area are filled with live music. Salsa, reggae and Latin jazz are still part of the nightly soundtrack in many neighborhoods.
Shopping options range from small boutiques in Old San Juan to large shopping malls and retail areas in the metropolitan area. Many visitors combine these experiences into one day – swimming in the morning, having lunch in the city, and exploring the historic streets in the evening.

I checked the current prices for these fares on Google Flights. A round trip flight from Richmond to San Juan in April costs approximately $529. Prices in Philadelphia are higher at $699 (you can fly the same route on Frontier for about $380). Buffalo probably has the best fare: about $265 round trip in mid-April.
