InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) to open InterContinental hotel in Papua New Guinea

The 179-room InterContinental Port Moresby is set to open in 2028 in a mixed-use development in the city's Diplomatic Quarter.

IHG Hotels & Resorts has partnered with Gulf Province Properties Limited, a subsidiary of Gulf Investment Trust, to launch its luxury hotel brand in Papua New Guinea for the first time in late 2028.

Currently, IHG has three existing properties in Port Moresby: Holiday Inn Express, Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza.

The latest signings add to IHG’s growing regional and global growth. In Australia and the Pacific, IHG's luxury and lifestyle portfolio includes 16 open InterContinental hotels and 2 hotels in the pipeline, with more than 230 hotels open worldwide and a further 100 under development.

The InterContinental Port Moresby is expected to be the centerpiece of a landmark mixed-use development located close to the National Parliament Buildings, the Supreme Court and the National Court of Justice, key central agencies of government and several foreign embassies.

“As the nation’s capital continues to strengthen its position on the regional and global stage, InterContinental Port Moresby will set a new standard for luxury hospitality,” said Matt Tripolone, managing director, Australia and Pacific, IHG Hotels & Resorts.

The hotel will feature an all-day dining restaurant, specialty restaurants, lobby lounge and poolside bar, as well as more than 600 square meters of meeting and event space, a club lounge, fitness center and outdoor swimming pool. The wider development will also feature approximately 6,000 square meters of office space, creating a new commercial and social hub for the city.

Tripolone said: “The capital of Papua New Guinea is entering an exciting new era of growth, driven by large-scale LNG investment and the upcoming launch of the country’s first NRL team in 2028. These developments are driving strong demand for world-class hotels, making it an ideal time to bring the Intercontinental brand to the market.”

“Partnering with IHG to launch its prestigious InterContinental brand reflects our confidence in the future of Port Moresby and Gulf Province. InterContinental Port Moresby will be a destination welcoming leaders, travelers and guests from around the world in the true Melanesian spirit of Papua New Guinea,” said Grand Chief Sir Chris Haiveta, Chairman of Gulf Province, Gulf Province Properties Limited, Hon. GCL KCMG and MP.
