Although there are only a few rivers to choose from, the options for river cruising in Europe are seemingly endless. Does the client want to experience the Danube? Admire the stunning canyons and castles of the Rhine? Douro tasting Port wine in its birthplace?
There is a wide range of itineraries, many of which are tailored to special interests and specific audiences. That was before I started learning about the differences between cruise brands and their ships.
I surveyed river cruise line executives to find out their most popular itineraries in Europe in 2026, hoping this would provide a convenient starting point for customers who know they want to take a river cruise but don't know where to start.
This is what they said:
Amadeus River Cruise
Amadeus has observed the highest demand for its Christmas Market cruises, as well as its Tulip Time cruises.
It's no surprise: Christmas market cruises often sell out because they grab the essence River cruise experience.

Avalon President Pam Hoffee said the line's most popular river is the Rhine, and its most popular itinerary is Romantic Rhine.
This eight-day cruise sails between Amsterdam and Basel, taking passengers around some of the most storied cities in the Netherlands, Germany, France and Switzerland.
“It remains a favorite because it showcases the river's greatest attractions, from fairy tale villages and medieval castles to classic cities like Amsterdam and Basel,” Hoffe said. “This is the quintessential Rhine experience and the perfect introduction to river cruising.”
Hoffee also suggested that consultants consider promoting Avalon's Active & Discovery cruises on the Rhine to clients. She says it's an attractive option for travelers who “want more choice and energy in their lives.” The price includes guided walking tours, biking and cultural experiences.
Riverside luxury cruise
The most popular itineraries in Riverside are Rhone river cruise. CEO Jennifer Halboth called it “our typical route through the south of France.”
Demand for cruises has always been popular, growing steadily every year, with 2026 being its best year yet. This route has one of the highest occupancy rates in 2026.
The cruise departs from Lyon and ends in Avignon, passing by Arles, Old Lyon and the medieval Chateau de Tarascon.
“This itinerary effortlessly captures everything that makes the South of France so special and has become a guest favorite,” Halbers said.

Riviera Tourism
The most popular itineraries on the Riviera remain consistent: Blue Danube River Cruise Stuart Milan, president of North America, said the product remains a top-seller year after year.
For those new to river cruising, a Danube cruise is a great entry point. (I would know; it was my first time!) While I haven’t sailed this ship with Riviera, it has some highlights that I’m familiar with: Dünstein, Melk, and Linz. The itinerary also includes a Hungarian folklore show while in Budapest.
Milan said the Danube allowed visitors to experience capital cities such as Budapest, Vienna and Bratislava, as well as explore smaller towns along the river.
“The mix of major cities and picturesque towns allows guests to experience multiple countries, cultures and perspectives in one unforgettable journey,” he said.
Scenic Area Group
Scenic Group, which owns Emerald Cruises & Tours and Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, considers Rhine cruises to be the most popular routes for both brands, said Ken Muskat, Scenic president of the U.S. and Latin America.
He pointed to the emerald Gem on the Rhine and scenic spots Rhine Highlights;Both voyages last eight days and run between Amsterdam and Basel.
Emerald cruises include a tour of Heidelberg, a walking tour from the Königstuhlberg to Heidelberg and a guided bicycle tour of Breisach.
Scenic tours include a private concert at the Rastatt Baroque Palace and a visit to Cochem an der Moselle; Scenic Cruises cover all shore excursions, including exclusive experiences such as the Baroque Palace. Butler service is also available on board.
Mukat also suggested that pairing it with a pre- or post-extension in Switzerland, London, Amsterdam or Copenhagen would make a “perfect trip” for first-timers and river regulars.
Tucker
Tauck's most popular itineraries company-wide, including its overland travel products, are blue danube cruises, said Beth Westerman, river cruise brand manager.
This 12-day cruise will take guests to the cities of Prague, Bratislava, Regensburg, Vienna, Budapest and Salzburg. On board the cruise, passengers will enjoy unique Tauck experiences at the following locations: a palace in viennaa private dinner at the Lobkovic Palace in Prague and a private tour of the Strahov Monastery in Prague.
Westerman said the trip has long been Tucker's most popular.

“Guests love the balance it achieves, combining iconic big cities like Vienna, Budapest and Passau with smaller, under-the-radar little story towns,” she said.
The itinerary features options not typically found on other Danube cruise itineraries such as exploring Budapest’s abandoned underground hospital, visiting Bratislava’s Mirror Gallery and Salzburg’s Electronics Museum.
