Day 1: Kolkata to Ganges Voyager 2
Arrival and embarkation
We arrived in Kolkata, the bustling capital of West Bengal, on an international flight and boarded the Ganges Voyager II, a luxury river cruise ship chartered by Uniworld exclusively for its guests – the same ship on which Jane McDonald was being interviewed for the UK’s Channel 5 show.
As we boarded the boat, we found the interiors of the boat to be elegantly designed with spacious rooms featuring panoramic windows, private balconies and en-suite facilities, ensuring a pleasant stay while cruising the Ganges.
My Governor's Suite
I stayed in the Viceroy suite, one of only two on the ship – very nice, fixed king-size four-poster bed, great location on the ship, and a sofa bed in the lounge section of the suite. At the Oberoi, upgrades are available in any of the Heritage, Viceroy and Maharaj suites. Word on the street: All upper suites have fixed king-size beds only.
For Uniworld cruises, the pricing structure is Signature Suite (lower deck), Colonial Suite (mid deck), then upgrade to 2 Heritage Suites, 2 Governor Suites, 1 Maharaj Suite
We all had the opportunity to tour the other people's rooms and all agreed that they were all very nice. Ganges Voyager II is a very beautiful ship. I would very happily recommend it to our clients.
Onboard Facilities
Ganges Voyager II offers a range of facilities including a spa, fitness centre and lounge areas where guests can relax and enjoy the view. Lunch and dinner are served on board, featuring a variety of local and international cuisines prepared by skilled chefs.
In the afternoon we sailed to Karna. This gave us time to get a better look at the ship and learn about Uniworld's health program.
Uniworld’s Wellness Programme is designed to enhance the wellbeing of passengers during their river cruises and includes a variety of activities, amenities and services to cater to the physical and mental health needs of passengers, ensuring a rejuvenating experience on board, delivered by Wellness Hosts. We are delighted to be working with Anushka, a fully qualified fitness trainer.
Activities offered by Anushka onboard Ganga II include yoga and meditation.
Guests can also make use of the fully equipped fitness centre, allowing them to work out to their heart's content. The equipment is modern and suitable for all fitness levels, ensuring everyone can stay active while on board. Uniworld's wellness programme includes spa services such as massages, facials and other treatments. Designed to relax and rejuvenate guests, these services are the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.
As part of the wellness program we were able to do sunset yoga on the deck while cruising the Ganges which was an unforgettable experience.

In the evening, we were invited to a launch cocktail party, followed by dinner, and the boat continued its cruise along the Ganges.
Day 2: Kalna to Chandannagar
After breakfast on board, we head to Karna for an excursion. Karna is famous for its temples, which were built primarily by the rulers of the Bardhaman dynasty and local nobles during the 18th and 19th centuries, highlighting their love and patronage of art and architecture. The exquisite designs and detailed terracotta workmanship of the Karna temples continue to fascinate tourists and historians, making it a treasured destination for those interested in India's architectural and cultural history. These include the iconic Nabha Kailas Temple.
We then visited the market and rode around in an electric tuk-tuk before returning to the boat for lunch and starting the cruise to Chandernagore.
Later, we enjoyed an Indian cooking demonstration on board by Ganges Voyager II’s Antara’s Executive Chef.

Arrive at Chandannagar
Afternoon walking tour
Once a French colony, Chandannagar has retained a distinct French influence in its architecture and culture. Explore its heritage buildings, churches and promenades to get a feel for the town's unique history.
Evening Entertainment
Back on the boat, we enjoyed a delicious dinner followed by local entertainment from a traditional Indian folk music group, giving us a glimpse into the region’s vibrant arts and music scene.
Then we set sail for Kolkata early in the morning
Day 3: Arrive in Kolkata
Our day in Kolkata started with a visit to the flower market, a riot of colour and fragrance as local vendors proudly displayed their brightly coloured wares. The lively atmosphere was infectious as florists created beautiful garlands and flower arrangements.
Next, we walk to the traditional potters’ corner in the north of the city, known as Kumartuli, where skilled artisans shape and carve clay idols of deities.
We then traveled to Calcutta Rescue’s Make Travel Count school for slum children, where we saw first-hand the transformative power of education and community support. This initiative highlights the importance of responsible tourism and giving back to local communities.
We then visited Mother Teresa’s former home, a humbling experience that highlighted her extraordinary legacy of compassion and service. The simple yet profound surroundings provided a quiet space to reflect on her life’s work and her ongoing efforts to support the less privileged in Kolkata.
The morning’s cultural experience ends with a visit to the iconic Victoria Memorial, a magnificent building that bears witness to Kolkata’s colonial history and architectural grandeur. Set in lush gardens, this marble monument provides a tranquil backdrop for understanding the city’s complex history.
Lunch was served on board. The afternoon was free time, during which we were lucky enough to see river dolphins – a rare and hopeful sign of improving water quality in Kolkata.
Towards the end of the day, we did sunset yoga on the deck with Anuska.
The evening entertainment featured a local dance troupe whose energetic performance showcased the rhythm and spirit of Bengali culture. We were even invited to join in, which was great fun!

Day 4: Kolkata to Jaipur
Disembarkation and Transfer
After we disembarked in Kolkata, we headed to the airport to catch a flight to Jaipur, which took about two hours.
The Oberoi Rajvilas
Upon arrival in Jaipur, we checked into the Oberoi Rajvilas, a luxurious resort set amidst landscaped gardens and traditional architecture. The rooms were spacious and elegantly furnished, a peaceful sanctuary after a day of travel.
The buildings reflect the architectural style of the region, and beautiful peacocks roam the gardens.
Dinner at the Oberoi Rajavilas is a culinary feast, with a menu that includes local Rajasthani dishes and international favourites. The attentive staff ensures your stay is comfortable, making the hotel an ideal base from which to explore Jaipur.

Day 5: Explore Jaipur
Amber Fort and the Pink City
Our first day started with a visit to the majestic Amber Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its intricate architecture and stunning views. We also visited Jantar Mantar, Maharaj's astronomical sundial, which is accurate to a fraction of a second. Astrology is still an important part of daily life in this region.
In the afternoon we will explore Jaipur, the “Pink City” with its bustling bazaars, vibrant markets and iconic landmarks, and we will enjoy a sumptuous lunch at the City Palace.

Afternoon – Local market and free evening party
Spend the afternoon visiting the local bazaars to shop for traditional handicrafts, textiles, and jewellery. The evening is free for you to relax or explore Jaipur at your own pace.
I bought beautiful shirts for about £7 each from a man who said he made them exclusively for Maharaj.
We then had dinner at the hotel where one of the ladies sat on the floor roasting traditional Indian chapatis over a fire which was delicious followed by a local performance.

Day 6: Jaipur – Agra
To Agra
The bus ride to Agra usually takes 4-5 hours depending on traffic. I won't say much about lunch time as it will be a surprise for the guests.
The Oberoi Amarvilas
We stayed at the Oberoi Amarvilas, a luxurious hotel located near the Taj Mahal. Every room has a view of the Taj Mahal. The rooms are elegantly designed, offer modern amenities and stunning views of the iconic building.
Tour Highlight – Taj Mahal at sunset

It is open from sunrise to sunset. Therefore, everyone must leave the mausoleum before sunset. But as a Uniworld exclusive tour group, we stayed at the Oberoi Amarvilas hotel opposite the monument parking lot, so we were able to watch the sunset and the changing colors of the mausoleum when it was empty and silent.
The highlight of the trip is a visit to the Taj Mahal at sunset. Guests are taken to the site by golf cart where they can witness the beauty of this monument as it changes colors with the setting sun. Dinner is served at the hotel
Day 7: Agra – New Delhi
Taj Mahal at sunrise
For those who want to continue soaking up the beauty of the Taj Mahal, there is now the option to experience it at sunrise, a magical moment that highlights the ethereal beauty of this monument. Afterwards, we return to the hotel for breakfast and prepare to depart for New Delhi.
The Oberoi New Delhi
Upon arrival in New Delhi, we checked into the Oberoi, a modern hotel that once again offers luxury and comfort. It is undoubtedly one of the best hotels in the world and a place that everyone in New Delhi, young and old, wants to see. The hotel even has its own air purifier, its own lungs, and there are visual displays throughout the hotel showing how it compares to the outside and other cities around the world.
New Delhi Tour
The New Delhi tour includes visits to historical sites, bustling markets and architectural wonders that showcase the city's rich history and diverse culture. Dinner is served at the hotel, offering a variety of delicious cuisine.
This itinerary combines cultural exploration, luxurious accommodation, and unforgettable experiences, making it an ideal journey for travelers seeking to explore the beauty and diversity of India.
Our afternoon in New Delhi was a combination of history and adventure, starting with a visit to Humayun’s Tomb. Often described as a mini Taj Mahal, this stunning monument is an architectural marvel surrounded by lush gardens and water features. The Mughal art and intricate detail on the mausoleum stand as a testament to India’s past. We continued with a city tour, driving past some of Delhi’s most iconic landmarks.
Next, we paid our respects at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial, the crematorium of Mahatma Gandhi. This simple memorial provides a quiet moment of reflection on the life of the Mahatma and his legacy to India and the world.
The highlight of the afternoon was a thrilling ride on a rickshaw through the narrow lanes of Old Delhi. The sights and sounds of the local markets and the aromas of street food stalls and other offerings filled the air as we navigated the busy and noisy streets, giving us a true taste of Delhi’s vibrant culture and daily life.
We ended the day with a final meal on the hotel’s rooftop terrace, admiring the city below and the kites (birds) flying and circling overhead.
In the morning we checked out and headed back to the airport for our flight home.
This was a trip of a lifetime. Although shorter than the 12 night trip offered by Uniworld, it gave us a brief taste of this incredible journey and the incredible country it covers.
Guests were well looked after and accompanied throughout the trip. The local staff were friendly, knowledgeable and great company.
