Discount operators cut transatlantic routes as network airlines expand: Travel Weekly

The years after the pandemic ushered in a new era of growth for independent transatlantic lounging airlines. But this summer, as network airlines continue to expand capacity, flyers will encounter the transatlantic market where such operators have retreated.

The two airlines have also made broader changes to their business strategies in recent months, including long-term measures to reduce production capacity by leasing aircraft from other operators. The Norwegian Atlantic will lease four of its 12 aircraft to India's Indigo. Since three of these leases did not take effect until the second half of the year, capacity was reduced from July.

The drama has reached an agreement to lease three of its 10 aircraft to the unnamed European airline in the spring.

Olafsson said Play is also highlighting the connection to the U.S.-Euro transportation through Reykjavik and is providing marketing to promote higher uninterrupted flights.

He said he hopes to eventually build more in the U.S., although he said that building partnerships could be a key component in boosting growth.

John Strickland, director of London-based JLS Consulting, said it would be difficult for Play or Norse to achieve a solid transatlantic foundation, a market that discount airlines have long struggled with.

“The problem is that it’s a seasonal market and there’s a lot of competition,” he said. “The airlines with premium offers are good.”

Regarding premium seats, the vultures are positioned much better than the super-cost carrier. Mikko Turtiainen, sales director for Condor America, said the airline typically charges 25% to 50% less than traditional competitors in all cabin classes.

“I think we had the best product price proposition when we entered Europe,” he said.

He also touted Condor's nine new European destinations, saying they will attract casual and corporate flyers.

Despite this, despite the end of the agreement with Lufthansa, the condor signed a transatlantic product, Lufthansa's casual brand Discover Growing up. This summer, Discover will sail two new German-US routes and plans to increase its seats on the market by 12.7%.
