How did SPAM® musubi (and SPAM® itself) become so beloved in Hawaii? Manabu Asaoka, musubi culture expert and Hawaiian musubi shop owner, writes in his The Musubi Book (Watermark Publishing, 2018) that many trace the invention of SPAM® musubi to Hawaiian-born nutritionist and entrepreneur Barbara Funamura, who first started selling the product in the early 1980s at the now-closed Joni-Hana restaurant on Kauai. Proudly made in Minnesota by Hormel, SPAM® has long been Hawaii's favorite breakfast meat, introduced to locals by U.S. soldiers during World War II. Hawaii residents have come to enjoy eating fried SPAM® slices with rice. So Funamura simply combines these two ingredients into an amazingly simple and delicious snack.
Originally found only on Kauai, this salty, satisfying treat soon spread to Oahu, and then the rest of the state. Today, SPAM® musubi can be found everywhere in Hawaii.
