Let’s see what changes on the wildest ride in the wilderness…

Classic riding, back on track

The Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is undergoing a top-to-bottom renovation, with work covering everything from the track itself to the ride vehicles. While most of the work is focused on the tracks and ride vehicles, the project is also tied to larger changes within the park, including relocating the attraction's maintenance facilities to make room for the upcoming Piston Peak and Villain Land expansions.

Early details suggest a smoother ride thanks to new track and updated trains designed to enhance comfort and sportiness.

One notable change is that the height requirement for roller coasters has been reduced to 38 inchesopening the ride to younger visitors and making Frontierland more accessible to families.

What's the story?

The Big Thunder Mountain Railroad traces its history to America's first gold rush, when Barnabas T. Gold Barmembers of Association of Explorers and Adventurers (SEA) struck gold in the Big Thunder area and formed the Big Thunder Mountain Company.

But Gold Bullion (who bears a strong resemblance to Disney legend Tony Baxter) soon finds himself on a collision course with the forces of Big Thunder, who resists the miners' attempts to mine the gold.

While the core experience remains the same, guests can expect some new elements to “add” to the attraction's storytelling.

New details in the depths

The most significant enhancement to the attraction is the cave scene, where glowing pools of water and glowing rock formations add new visual depth. These moments don't overwhelm the attraction's story, but rather give a sense that something unusual, perhaps even dangerous, is lurking beneath the surface.

It’s a reminder that Big Thunder isn’t just a thrill ride, it’s a place with a story, and that story is constantly evolving.

The big question is whether these changes simply modernize the experience or meaningfully enhance it. With updated hardware, updated visuals and a smoother ride experience, the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will re-establish itself as one of the Magic Kingdom’s must-see attractions.

Luckily, we don't have to wait long to find out.

What else is coming to Frontierland?

In addition to “The Wildest Ride in the Wild,” Frontierland will soon be home to “The Wildest Race in the Wild,” as characters from the Cars movies prepare for a massive off-road race at Piston Peak National Park.

The new area, which replaces Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer's Island, will feature trees, mountains, waterfalls, rivers and geysers inspired by America's national parks.

piston peak

The main attraction is an off-road race in which riders pilot new ride vehicles through the mountain trails of Piston Peak while dodging geysers and splashing through mud holes.

The second attraction will be a family-friendly race featuring favorite “Cars” characters.
