Apple upgrade: digital passport, live translation

Digital U.S. Passport and Live Translation – These are the biggest travel upgrades announced by Apple in its Global Developer Conference keynote on Monday.

Apple said digital passports will start boarding this fall.

“While it is not an alternative physical passport, digital IDs can be used for domestic travel in supported TSA checkpoints, applications and conditions requiring age and identification verification,” said Kathy Lin, software engineering manager at Apple Services.

Google Announced similar features September. A TSA spokesman told Skift at the time that it has been around for about 10 years even if other countries have implemented various digital passport programs.

Apple has enabled nine U.S. and Puerto Rico ID storage spaces. Lin said there are more.

Here are details of more travel products announced by Apple – the upgrade will take place this fall, Apple said.

Live translation

Apple is integrating real-time translation into apps for email, face and phone.

These features are accessible through all devices with these apps, including iPhone, iPad, iMac, and Watch.

For example, in a phone call on a telephone application, AI can generate verbal translations between two people speaking different languages. In Apple's demo, an English-speaking person asked German catering providers about the upcoming availability. Catering providers responded in German and after a brief delay you can hear English translations. Apple says it works even if one of them doesn't use the iPhone.

The FaceTime app can automatically translate subtitles when the caller speaks different languages.

The Message Application will automatically send the text to the recipient and will automatically translate the incoming messages.

iMac is getting new mobile apps with the same real-time translation capabilities.

“Real-time translation in message supports English (US, France), German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (Spain) and Chinese (simplified). Real-time translation in phone and faceTime, available in one-on-one call in English (UK, UK, France, Germany, Portuguese (Brazil) and Apple (Brazil) and spain (spain) and spain (US) and faceTime.

Leslie Ikemoto, Apple's investment experience director, introduced the live translation.

Refreshed boarding pass

iPhone wallet is being upgraded for its flight boarding pass. There is a new connection with the map for easy airport navigation.

There is a new connection to Find My app so users can more easily see any Apple tag tracking device's whereabouts and report missing bags when needed. The pass itself will display real-time flight updates and be able to be shared with others.

For developers

Apple says developers can enable new live translations in their third-party apps. Travel and other companies can also build applications, and even users can take advantage of Apple Intelligence's generative AI even if they are offline.

Apple takes the hiking app as an example. With an upgraded app, users should be able to search for hiking in daily language.

  • Map: Enable your phone to track when you are in a restaurant or store, etc., and save it to the access location on the map for later sharing.
  • iPhone: Screenshot, automatically added to the calendar.
  • iMac: Live activity updates, such as flights or Uber, come to the menu bar.
  • Message: Create polls in group chats for group travel planning.
  • Message: Exchange currency in collective messages through Apple cash.
  • Message: Tag time-sensitive text messages, such as ready tables.
  • Vision Pro headphones: Lifespan 3-D photos and videos.
  • Vision Pro headphones: A digitally heading to Jupiter's satellite.
  • Apple Music: Lyrics Translation and Pronunciation.

Last year, Apple announced Apple Intelligence AI Model and Its Plan to Enhance CHATGPT. The company said the upgraded Siri will be able to extract context from the app, plan dinners in time to attend events, or share real-time flight information.

Apple faces criticism for not releasing expected features.

“This work takes more time to get to our high-quality bars and we look forward to sharing more about it in the coming year,” Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, said on Monday.
