Sometimes traveling long distances isn't easy. Staycations and short road trips are often the best way to get away from or stay out of trouble. Everyone needs a break from time to time, and the Midwest is filled with nearby places to visit, things to do, and delicious local cuisine to try.
We visited Galena as guests of the Goldmoor Inn and Visit Galena and received no other financial compensation. We provide reviews based on personal experiences during our visit.
One of the places we love to visit near the Chicago area is Galena, IL. In less than three hours, you'll find yourself in a charming town perfect for relaxation, shopping, leisure activities and, of course, good food.
Galena's Rich History
When you arrive in downtown Galena, it's hard to believe that this sleepy town once rivaled Chicago's population in the early 1800s. This was the site of America's first large-scale mining “boom,” when settlers came here ready to make their fortunes.
You don’t have to spend time there to know that General Ulysses S. Grant made Galena his home. Visit the Galena and U.S. Grant Museum to learn all about Grant's time in Galena. Full of history and artifacts, it's a great place to start.

There are many historic homes and buildings to visit and admire. These include the Ulysses S. Grant Home and the DeSoto House Hotel, which even served as his campaign headquarters in 1868.
welcome everyone
One of the things we love most about Galena is that despite its history, the community welcomes all who come to visit. No matter where you're from or what your stripes are, you'll feel right at home.

Galena is small but has a lot to do
The downtown strip is only half a mile long, but you'll be surprised to find over a hundred shops to explore. From delicious gourmet chocolates to vintage clothing, there's something for everyone. The good news is that getting around is very easy. Just park at one end and take a leisurely stroll down Main Street to explore.

Many flavors to explore
The main street is lined with many different types of shops. We found some lovely British teas, locally produced honey and warm cozy socks. We had a great time. Here are some of our favorites.
One of the most unique shops on Main Street is Root Beer Bash. Yes, a store entirely dedicated to root beer. It just so happened that Diana loved root beer, so she was like a kid in a root beer store! To make things even more fun, you can float the ice cream float bar with any soda available in the store (spoiler: they also have some other specialty flavors like orange, lime, and black cherry).
You can even customize a six-pack to take with you, which is super special for your favorite root beer lover.
Pro tip: Just be sure not to leave them in the car during cold weather. They might open the hat and make a mess. Don't ask how we know this.

Pasta lovers will find it difficult to choose which pasta to take home spaghetti. While you'll find many Italian-style pastas, don't be surprised when you find German pasta! Pasta in every shape, flavor and style imaginable.

And socks
I like socks. I mean I really like socks. If you know me, you know I have an obsession with socks. especially compression socksbut that’s actually another article. One of the shops on Galena Street is Suitable for bare feet. Nothing but socks. I've definitely spent way too much time here and have introduced some new socks to my never ending collection. Whatever your passion, I'm sure they have a pair of socks for you.
