I recently attended the ASTA River Cruise Expo in Amsterdam for the third time in four years, and one thing is clear: river cruising is constantly evolving. New brands are entering the market, established brands are refining their offerings, and travelers are becoming more discerning.
With this in mind, I revisited and updated the blog I originally wrote on March 24, 2024, adding a few new observations and one noteworthy addition.
River cruising combines comfort, culture and convenience like no other. You unpack once, walk through the heart of each destination, and step directly into historic towns. But not all river cruise lines are created equal. Each brand appeals to a different type of traveler – just like hotel brands.
To simplify the differences, I often compare river cruise lines to familiar hotel brands.
(These comparisons reflect my own experience, conversations with other consultants, and insights from cruise line executives.)
Amadeus Cruises—Marriott (Exquisite, reliable, comfortable and high-end)
Best for: Flexible travelers who don’t want everything bundled together

Amadeus is an Austrian family company with over 40 years of experience in the European river industry. As with Marriott hotels, the experience is refined and reliable without going into the highest levels of luxury.
The ships feature modern European design, attentive service and gourmet cuisine focusing on local cuisine. The atmosphere on board is relaxed and cosmopolitan.
One key differentiator from many competitors is flexibility. Excursions are often optional rather than bundled into the fare, which appeals to travelers who want an upscale experience while tailoring their activities to their interests.
AmaWaterways — Fairmont Hotel (Upscale, lively, focused on cooking)
Best for: Active travelers who want luxury and energy

AmaWaterways falls into the luxurious yet dynamic category. Since its launch in 2002, the route has grown to nearly 30 ships sailing in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. I have been on 3 Amma Waterways cruises, most recently the 2024 Rhine Christmas Market, and I can vouch for the quality of the experience.
Like the Fairmont, Ama combines exquisite surroundings with warm atmosphere and rich cuisine. It's also popular with active travelers thanks to the many daily excursion options, including cycling and hiking.
Dining is a highlight. Armagh is the first river cruise company to enter the gastronomic scene BBQ restaurantmany cruise ships feature specialty venues such as a Chef’s Table experience.
Avalon Waterways — Westin (Modern comfort and flexibility)
Best for: Travelers who value comfort and seek flexibility

Avalon focuses on comfort, space and flexibility. As with Westin hotels, the experience is modern and relaxed rather than formal.
The defining characteristics of Avalon are Ship Design Suitethe cabin faces the river and is equipped with floor-to-ceiling windows that slide open to create an open-air balcony. The whole room is no longer a small outdoor space, but a view.
Avalon also emphasizes choice. Guests can choose from a variety of excursions – classic sightseeing, hiking or cycling – so each day can be tailored to personal interests.
Celebrity River Cruise—JW Marriott (Modern luxury with social energy)
Best for: Travelers who want a more active, lifestyle experience

Exquisite cruise plan launched celebrity river In 2027, it will introduce the avant-garde design style of its ocean-going ships to the inland water market. I'm so excited about this new entry into river cruising! Apparently, I'm not the only one – their 2027 itinerary sold out in six minutes!
Early plans call for ships to sail on the Rhine and Danube rivers, with the long-term goal to expand to about 20 ships.
If successful, Celebrity could introduce a more lifestyle-oriented approach to river cruising—offering modern design, extensive dining options and a more social on-board atmosphere, similar to the energy of a JW Marriott (in a boutique-hotel kind of way).
Emerald Cruises—W Hotels (Modern design with strong value)
Best for: Fashion-conscious, value-seeking travelers

Emerald color is mid-to-high-end, but tends to have a younger, more modern feel.
The ship features stylish interiors, an open atrium and innovative spaces such as a swimming pool that transforms into a cinema at night. The overall atmosphere is more energetic than many traditional river cruise brands.
Emeralds also have powerful values. Many amenities and excursions are included, while prices are often lower than luxury brands like Tauck or Uniworld.
Riverside Luxury Cruise – Four Seasons (Spacious, refined, luxurious)
Best for: Luxury travelers who value space and service

Riverside entered the market after acquiring several former Crystal River vessels and relaunching them with a luxury focus.
The atmosphere is elegant yet relaxed – very Four Seasons hotel-like. Service is attentive and attentive without being overly formal. When attending the ASTA River Cruise Expo in 2024, I stayed in the cabin above as my “hotel”, it was spacious and luxurious!
Since these ships were originally designed for the Crystal, they also feel more spacious than many river vessels, giving guests more space in their suites and public areas.
Riviera River Cruise—InterContinental Hotels & Resorts (High-end, reliable value)
Best for: Travelers who pursue quality and value

The Riviera is firmly in the premium category—above mass market, but below ultra-luxury.
The ship is elegant, the itinerary is thoughtfully designed, and the service is professional and reliable. As with the InterContinental, the focus is on quality and substance rather than flashy extras.
Riviera appeals to tourists (primarily British tourists, but increasingly appealing to younger baby boomers and North American tourists with an average age of 55 to 60) who want a refined river cruise experience at a more affordable price than luxury brands.
Scenic River Cruise – EDITION (Minimalist and ultra-luxurious)
Best for: Travelers who want it all included, no decisions to make

The Scenic positions itself firmly in the ultra-luxury category, but its design differs from what many travelers expect.
Instead of ornate decorations, the sightseeing boats feature sleek, minimalist interiors with neutral tones and modern lines. Luxury comes from experience, not visual splendor.
The scenery is okay Super all-inclusive. Excursions, drinks, gratuities, transfers, butler service and specialty dining are all included, meaning guests rarely have to dig into their wallets.
Tok River Cruise – The Peninsula Hotel (quiet, seamless luxury)
Best for: Travelers who want everything to go smoothly

Tauck is firmly established in the luxury category and is known for delivering an incredibly smooth travel experience. This was probably my favorite river cruise brand last week and I had the great pleasure of sailing on Tauck’s MS Grace through the Netherlands and Belgium last week and experiencing the “Tauck-ness” firsthand.
It’s said that you can leave a Tauker River cruise richer than when you embarked, and they’re not wrong! They actually give you cash when you have lunch “alone” in the city. If your lunch is less than the cash you received, you get to keep the money!
The ship deliberately carries fewer passengers than it can accommodate, creating a more spacious and personal atmosphere. Almost everything is included – excursions, tips, transfers, drinks and special cultural experiences.
Taoke also offers exclusive activities such as private palace nights and after-hours museum visits, thanks to its long history of guided tours. We enjoyed a private after-get off work dinner and a visit to the Moritzhaus Museum in The Hague.
Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection — Rosewood Hotels & Resorts (Boutique luxury with strong design features)
Best for: Design lovers who want boutique luxury

Uniworld remains one of the most distinctive brands in river cruising. this is one of them comprehensively Inclusive river cruise lines with just a few optional upgrades. I had the pleasure of staying in the Deluxe Balcony Cabana as my “hotel” room at the Expo, it was gorgeous!
Each ship has its own design philosophy, which means the visual experience on board varies more from ship to ship than on most routes. Older ships feature ornate décor, while newer ships and renovations tend toward a cleaner palette, lacquered wood, and refined furnishings.
The result is similar to a Rosewood hotel—a luxury hotel with strong character and attentive service.
Viking Cruises—Marriott's Autograph Collection (Fashionable, reliable, culture-focused)
Best for: First-time river cruisers who value consistency and predictability

Viking is the most recognizable name in river cruising.
Its nearly identical longships offer Scandinavian design, consistent service, and a predictable onboard experience across European rivers—one of the key reasons for their popularity, especially among travelers who value consistency. Viking is also adults-only, ensuring a quiet, child-free environment.
The onboard experience emphasizes cultural enrichment through lectures, destination planning and excursions. Pricing is still slightly below the luxury level, but booking early typically requires final payment about a year in advance, whereas competitors only require final payment a few months before departure.
VIVA Cruises – Kimpton Hotels (Modern, social, lifestyle-focused)
Best for: Social travelers who want a modern, relaxed vibe

VIVA Cruises is a German company that brings a modern, lifestyle-oriented approach to river cruising.
The ship features stylish interiors, multiple dining options and an all-inclusive model that covers drinks, minibar, Wi-Fi and gratuities. The atmosphere on board is relaxed and social rather than formal.
Currently most of the guests are European, especially German, but approx. 10% of passengers are from North Americathe company hopes to double that number in the next few years.
