Europe’s Best Christmas-Themed Cruises

Europe’s Best Christmas-Themed Cruises

Who knew that a cruise with no kids, no crowds, and no casinos would be the perfect way to get back into my Christmas spirit?

I’m not going to lie, when I was first invited on a holiday-themed cruise along the Rhine River, I rolled my eyes. A whole week of Christmas markets? For those who feel like the holidays have lost their luster, the idea may sound more exhausting than enthralling.

I used to be immersed in the magic of Christmas, but in recent years, as a mother of three, the holidays have become more about letting other people achieve the magic than enjoying it myself. Still, I have high hopes that a stroll through Europe's liveliest towns will rekindle my love for Christmas, in time to share it with my family. Little did I know that this voyage would not only open up the sparkling trinkets in my tote bag that I would bring home, but it would also help me reconnect with the wonder of Christmas.

Reluctantly boarding a flight in Basel

I arrived in a state of total Christmas cynicism. When I stepped on board, I expected to see tacky Christmas decorations: plastic trees plastered with tricolor tinsel and candy canes, crew members wearing oversized Santa hats and brightly colored sweaters with contrasting patterns, jingling bells and singing carols in unison. But there is none of that here. Instead, an elegant Christmas tree is tucked away in a corner, with bright baubles and white lights giving off a warm glow. Quiet jazz playing of holiday classics filled the air, and the staff welcomed us with friendly smiles—not a Santa hat in sight.

I was joined by my cousin who felt the same way – she'd also never been to a Christmas market and was also worried about partying too much during next week's winter-themed festivities. But we soon discovered that there was more to this trip than just market stalls, shops and desserts.

Tearful market twists and turns

Little trinkets and treats were piled on the booth tables, and crowds crisscrossed the aisles, filled with chatter and Christmas cheer. The scent of roasted chestnuts filled the air. Night fell quickly, and I looked around at my surroundings while warming my hands with a glass of mulled wine. In the center of the town square, three women in Victorian carol costumes sang in harmony, “Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht…” I couldn't make out the words, but I recognized the tune: “Silent Night.” Their songs filled the air, and some passers-by sang along, while others stood quietly, listening.

I looked around and I could feel the twinkling lights, the smiling faces, the couples holding hands, the children jumping up and down excitedly. This is… amazing. Over the next few days we visited Christmas markets in four countries and it didn’t take long for me to realize that each stop had something different to offer. Basel's markets are sophisticated and high-end, set in the well-preserved Old Town, and serve Swiss specialties like raclette and fondue. In France, Strasbourg is considered the country's “Christmas capital,” with its huge markets, wooden stalls, and rich French and German cuisine. Germany brings variety: Cologne's market surrounding its cathedral is impressive; Ruedesheim has a cozy wine-country feel; Mannheim's modern city setting brings big crowds and global flavours; Freiburg favors local cuisine, showcasing the festive fare of the Black Forest; and Breisach, although smaller, has an authentic and personal feel. In Koblenz, a scenic gondola soars over the Rhine to a fortress overlooking the city – a unique experience that sets this stop apart from the rest. Finally, in the Netherlands, Dordrecht hosts the country's largest Christmas market, filled with Dutch food, bright lights and festive fun for all ages.

Each market creates new memories and with every sip of mulled wine I feel my cold heart warm with festive cheer. Could exploring the best Christmas markets in Europe give me the time and space I need to rekindle my love for Christmas?

Rhineside and dining

During our stops, we would lounge comfortably on the roof terrace of the two-story ship and cruise past castles (I counted a dozen), sipping hot cocoa and sharing stories while snapping photos of the surroundings. The stretch between Ruedesheim and Koblenz offers some of the most beautiful scenery – this 40-mile stretch is often called the Romantic Rhine. It is one of the most castle-dense areas in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, renowned for its extraordinary landscape and historic architecture. We took a break from our delicious meal downstairs and the floor-to-ceiling windows ensured we didn't miss a moment of the view while enjoying our delicious multi-course meal.

On the boat, we became kids again, decorating gingerbread cookies with sweet icing and rainbow-colored sprinkles, and the scent of Christmas spices filled the air. We laughed with new friends over dinner and even sang carols in the lounge over cocktails. We chatted with other guests and learned that many were enjoying their second, fourth, or even sixth Christmas Market River Cruise – they loved it the first time and now they’re hooked.

Holiday Grinch is giddy with joy

By the end of the week I was sipping mulled wine and buying a cup from every Christmas market I went to. I hummed holiday songs while strolling through the glittering stalls, unabashedly buying trinkets and Christmas souvenirs for my kids (did I really need a mini glass tree?). Without the pressure of letting everyone else enjoy their vacation, I finally found my own mojo. It’s not just the beauty of each town or the charm of the cruise ships that fascinates me about Christmas; It’s permission to slow down and enjoy the experience. I wasn't just collecting souvenirs, I was slowly finding something I thought I had lost: a love for the holidays, which I thought I had outgrown. With a new outlook, I now enter the holidays with a newfound love for Christmas and a desire to share the holiday joy with my family. Thinking about this repurposed Grinch – and already dreaming of adding it to my mug collection.
