Dutch Caribbean ABC Islands – Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao

Willemstad, Curacao

I'm a big fan of this ABC Islands Dutch Caribbean also known as the Leeward Antilles. All three are my top picks for a blue Christmas. They are only 50 miles off the coast of Venezuela. A major plus is that they are located outside of Caribbean Hurricane Alley.

They all have close ties with the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Aruba and Curacao are now municipalities, while Bonaire remains part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The climate of the ABC Islands is atypical of a desert with no rivers. They are world-famous for their incredible beaches, dive sites, and snorkeling. Additionally, its unique pastel-colored Dutch Caribbean colonial architecture is picturesque.

If you go to the islands in November/December, you can experience Christmas twice. Sinterklaasavond (Saint Nicholas Eve) takes place in the Netherlands in late November/early December, when Santa Claus Give gifts. Therefore, these islands host Dutch Christmas 3 to 4 weeks before American Christmas on the 25th.th.

Aruba

Aruba – Arashi Beach

Aruba calls itself “an island of joy.” By Christmas, it becomes “an island of joy.” Holiday lights and decorations are everywhere and cause for celebration. Most of the beaches are located on the south and west sides of the island, as this area is not affected by large ocean currents. People come from all over the world to snorkel, dive and swim here. Top beaches include Eagle Beach, Palm Beach, and Baby Beach. Fireworks explode over the beach during the festival.

The capital, Oranjestad, is a hub with an international airport and cruise ship port. The city is a popular location for shopping, accommodation and beaches. On December 5, Santa Claus arrives in Oranjestad on the “Ship from Spain”, marking the start of the holiday season. Children lined up to receive gifts, candy and music.

Beach bars and resorts play reggae and soca versions of classic carols. Seroe Preto is a rural hill famous for its unique decoration. A tradition on the island is to hang 3 pieces of aloe vera on the door and tie it with a red ribbon. Venezuelan culture influences Christmas food and music. You might hear Gaitas music playing and find ayaca (Venezuela tamales) on the menu.

bonaire

Southern Bonaire Tour on Golf Cart

Fewer tourists than Aruba and Curacao, bonaire is a gem. Bonaire is known as one of the best places in the world for snorkeling and diving, with over 90 dive sites. Its coral reef-fringed shore or fringing reef offers many convenient snorkeling spots.

Additionally, just 0.5 miles (800 meters) west of Bonaire is Klein (“Little”) Bonaire, known for its incredible snorkeling. All reefs and beaches are protected by Bonaire National Marine Park. Chachacha and Coco beaches are just a short walk away from the capital Kralendijk. Sorobon Beach is a popular spot for windsurfing, and Klein Bonaire has the pristine No Name Beach.

I found interesting Christmas decorations on my golf cart tour of southern Bonaire. On the beach we stumbled across these painted wood carvings of Christmas trees and other festive designs. “Bon Pasku” means “Merry Christmas” in the local Creole language papiomento. Santa Claus arrives at Wilhelmina Square in Kralendijk by boat at the end of November.

Willemstad, Curacao Queen Emma Boardwalk

One of my favorite places for Christmas decorations and nightlife in the Caribbean (along with San Juan, Puerto Rico) is Willemstad. The town is filled with vibrant lights and music. The Queen Emma Boardwalk takes on a rainbow of colors as music echoes across the water. However, they changed the lights to green and red in December.

Just like other ABC islands, curacao It is famous for its stunning beaches, diving and shopping. Nearby Mambo Beach is one of the most popular beaches on the island. Like Bonaire, Curacao also has the uninhabited Klein Island, which is great for snorkeling and diving.

Arrive in Sinterklaas by boat on December 5th in the capital Willemstad. The island, which was already full of festive atmosphere, burst into even more festive joy. Willemstad is a dream destination for Christmas decorations, lights and shopping. There are 3 festive markets at Landhuis Chobolobo Christmas Village, Kura Hulanda Village Christmas Market and Pietermaai Christmas Market.

jamaica

Dunn's River Falls, Jamaica

Another Caribbean gem, jamaica Known for its stunning beaches, waterfalls, snorkeling and grilled chicken. I'll take roast chicken any day for Christmas. A popular destination is the cruise port of Ocho Rios, home to the popular Dunn's River Falls and Mystic Mountain. For music fans, this is the home of Bob Marley, so enjoy One Love during the holidays.

Jamaica has some interesting Christmas traditions. Where else can you hear reggae mixed with Christmas music? Every year on Christmas Eve, most major towns hold large markets or “gran markets” for holiday shopping. Today, Jamaica still respects the Jonkonnu tradition from the colonial era. It blends African masks with British folk culture.

Greneda

Ylang ylang
Ylang Ylang – Grenada

Known as the “Spice Island” Greneda A sanctuary for the senses. Located at the tip of the Grenadines Islands in the southeastern Caribbean, it is often overlooked by tourists. As a result, visitors can experience this compact (11 miles wide, 21 miles long) and pristine island with fewer crowds. The climate and black soil are ideal for growing exotic spices and herbs. So there are many spice and cooking tasting tours.

You can experience a spicy and unforgettable Christmas in Grenada! The holiday music was most likely Eastern Caribbean style parang music. It's a mix of Spanish and African influences.

Here, a spicy farm-to-table Christmas dinner may be one of your most memorable. Grenadian ham is cooked with cloves and pineapple slices. Next to it is the national dish, oil. It is a stew made with breadfruit, meat, callaloo vegetables, dumplings, coconut milk and spices. A favorite drink was sorrel made from hibiscus flowers and flavored with cloves and cinnamon.
