During my stay at three Sun Siyam resorts, I discovered how luxury, local heritage and marine conservation intertwine to reveal a Maldives that most travelers have never seen.
The Maldives is more than just a honeymoon destination
I visited the local islands last time I was in the Maldives – a glimpse into daily life in the Maldives – but I don't think I've ever been Felt Get to know the culture as deeply as I did at Sun Siyam.

December to April is the best time to visit the Maldives – when the seas are calm, the skies are clear, and underwater visibility is at its peak. I went in October, partly to avoid the peak season crowds, and the weather turned out to be perfect the entire time.
It’s for this reason that I often encourage travelers to head to popular destinations during the off-season. Don't always let the calendar define you.

Choose your villa
All three resorts (Iru Fuji, Iruweliand viru reef) I visited the beach villa and water villa and each room felt like its own little world. You can choose between a beach villa, tucked under palm trees with the beach on your doorstep, or an overwater villa, suspended above the lagoon with a private plunge pool and steps leading straight to the ocean.
Both options were dreamy, but I admit it – the water bungalow captured my heart. It's a magical feeling to wake up with nothing but the ocean in all directions, coffee in hand, and slide right off the deck into the water. This is the ultimate dream for anyone who loves to spend as much time in the water as possible.
Although the villa is luxurious, it never feels overdone. Natural wood tones, generous spaces and thoughtful details like an open-air bathroom make it feel more like a retreat than a resort. Whether you're floating in the pool, stretching out on the deck, or watching the sunset turn the lagoon to gold, the experience quietly redefines the meaning of paradise.
Pay attention to culture
Even in resort life, a little respect goes a long way. Learn Dhivehi greetings, cover up when walking through public spaces, and always walk gently in the ocean. Coral reefs, like humans, thrive when treated with care.

Getting There: Travel Tips for Your Maldives Trip
If you live in the United States, traveling to the Maldives is no small feat, but if you plan it right, the trip can be part of the adventure. I have flown to the Maldives twice, once via Abu Dhabi and once via Doha, and without a doubt I would choose Hamad International Airport in Doha each time.
Hamad Airport (that's the official name, but most travelers call it Doha) is one of the best airports in the world for long-term layovers—spotless, modern, and surprisingly quiet for its size. If you fly with Qatar Airways and your layover is eight hours or more, the airline often offers free layover hotels, which is a huge difference on long-haul travel.
For shorter layovers, the Antelope Airport Hotel within the terminal is an oasis.
