As we venture into 2025, I noticed a significant development in global travel demand, reshaping how we plan our journey. After guiding many of my clients through these changes, I cannot fully emphasize how important records of domestic and international travel are crucial. I've compiled this list to be ready so you don't shatter your travel dreams by being denied boarding at the airport.
Real ID card – United States

Real ID is a federal requirement that has been delayed several times, but will now take effect May 7, 2025. I have been providing advice to all clients on this enhanced safety measures that would be mandatory for boarding any flight within the United States (whether you are flying in commercial or private) and accessing federal buildings. This change is designed to improve travel security and reduce identity fraud.
If you haven't obtained your real ID, don't worry! You can still use alternative identification files when flying domestically or entering federal facilities. I suggest using you Passport, Enhanced Driver's License (EDL), Global Entry or TSA Precheck Card.
For those who are ready to get a real ID card, you need to arrange access to your local Automotive Department (DMV). Be sure to bring basic documents such as your birth certificate and social insurance card and payment methods (nominal fees). Reports say that so far, only about 56% of U.S. driver’s licenses meet actual ID standards. This is especially important if you are planning to travel and don’t have a current passport. There are some exceptions – for example, travelers under 18 do not need a real ID.
passport

If you plan to travel internationally, don't catch you off guard with your passport expiration date! Many travelers were surprised to find that many countries require passports to remain valid for several months Exceed Their planned departure date. Even if your passport is valid on the return date, you may refuse to enter. I always recommend that you renew your visa in advance to avoid any last minute complications or travel cancellations.
visa

In my experience in coordinating international travel, I understand that visas and ETAs (E-Travel Authorization) are your portals to abroad, although they vary widely:
- Visa often requires a more detailed application process, including comprehensive documentation such as financial statements and detailed itineraries.
- They often need visits from an embassy or consulate, sometimes in-person interviews
- These documents come in various forms – travel, work, study or residence visas – each with a different validity period
- Visa usually offers physical passport stamps, which many of my clients value as memorable souvenirs

Driving abroad

Let me share a crucial detail until the last minute, which is often overlooked – International driving permits when renting overseas. In most destinations, driving without proper permits and insurance is strictly prohibited. I highly recommend checking State Department National Information The website meets the requirements of your specific destination. While not all countries recognize U.S. licenses, most countries welcome International Driving Permits (IDPs). You need to protect your IDP through AAA before departure – only $20.
