Updated January 2025

We are pleased to offer Yellowstone National Park and Montana winter in Yellowstone National Park. All shared ideas are our own perspective and reflect our experiences during our trip.

Winter vacation. Many people consider sunny, beaches and warm weather destinations. These can provide lovely breathing for people living in North America’s snow belt or other cold weather attractions.

If you are like us and don’t mind wearing layers and enjoying the cold weather, Yellowstone Country is a great place to consider exploring.

If you've read any of our stories on your summer visit Yellowstone National Park You know this is a must-visit destination. The first national park in the United States is a national park that can be visited endlessly. We met people who lived near the park and said that every time they visited they saw or learned something new.

Warning: This post is about the beauty of visiting Yellowstone country in winter. We will save all the delicious food and drinks we have for another post. Don't worry, there are many!

Winter Wonderland

The original snow and the fact that there is no crowd can not only enhance the beauty of the park. No line. No waiting. This is a perfect time to visit for someone like me who really try to limit my time around a lot of people.

I visited this iconic old faithful geyser in the summer and shared my experience with hundreds to a thousand people. During this visit, we shared only one outbreak with a few and a rogue coyote in the old believers.

This is just a glimpse through the winter visit to Yellowstone National Park.

Adventurous travelers, don't worry. There are many stops along the way, and you can hike in the park for a short or long period of time to see many highlights. You can arrange your comfortable visit type and will like the most.

Winter Activities

The available outdoor activities are huge and can be customized for your expertise. When we were there, we loved snowmen, snowmobile and dog sleds. Downhill and cross-country skiing are also abound in the area.

If you like dogs, don't miss any chance to go to dogs. The dogs were excited and it was fun to watch them get ready. Their expectations for running are like barking wildly, but they are quiet and serious about the ride itself. It's comfortable and a great way to get into deeper woodlands to enjoy the beautiful scenery. The company that hosts us is The Spirit of Northern Adventure. They work with rescued Alaska Husky and even offer you the opportunity to drive your own sled by directing them. We found that all the lecturers and drivers are great enthusiasts of dogs and truly good teachers.

Another way to enjoy the quietness of the winter forest is to snowshoe. This is our first time and we love it! It's spectacular to walk around the woods at your own speed and bring it all in. I will tell you that it is really easy and no different from a regular walk. Shoes and poles can help you balance and walk around the snow. You can walk at your own pace and truly find peace in nature. It was a very amazing experience and we never thought we would enjoy so much.

For those who need speed (not me) snowmobile, this is your winter transportation of choice. Traveling through the woods will surely keep your adrenaline moving forward. We use West Yellowstone snowmobile, which is completely different.

Winter Biology

We love nature and especially like to see animals in our natural habitat. You may not have a chance to see a bear hibernating in winter, but you will have a chance to see the elements of a bison. One day, we saw nearly 200 bisons on our journey through the park (Diana is counting).

At the beginning of the trip we were lucky enough to see bighorn sheep grazing on the side of the road.

During our visit we saw bison, elk, sheep, coyote, wolf, musk, deer and fox. Many birds show swans, ducks, geese, vultures, and even blue herons.

While you may experience bears in the wild in the winter in Yellowstone, you can Grizzly Bear and Wolf Discovery Center In West Yellowstone. This nonprofit center is a wildlife park and educational facility year-round.

What we like most about the center is that all animals have been rescued and otherwise they cannot survive without the help of the center. Take the time to not only visit animals, but also watch movies, learn about all the conservation research they have done, and watch exhibitions. They have a great gift shop and all the proceeds are directed to care for animals and center maintenance.

Romantic accommodation

One of the best things to do in winter is to be ugg and become comfortable. Once you have a full day of enjoyment, everything nature has to offer, head to a luxurious cabin or resort for all the creature comforts you want. Whether you like spa treatments, cooking feasts, wine and food, or all of them, there are plenty of options.

One of our favorite sites is our return Lonely mountain pasture. They offer over 85 km of modified woodland cross-country ski trails and 30 km of snowshoe trails on the ranch. They also host sled rides, live music and a delicious rib dinner in the Lantern Lodge. Make sure you look up while you are sled riding back to your cabin. You won't want to miss the magical sparkling stars in the clear night sky.

You can also stay in Yellowstone National Park Old faithful Sulloch or Mammoth Hot Spring Hotel. Both are full service features and offer unique and very comfortable accommodation within the park, with catering and conveniences.

remember

We highly recommend visiting Yellowstone Country in the winter, but there are a few things you need to keep in mind before booking.

  • Be prepared. You need to wear several layers of clothing to keep yourself warm and comfortable all day. From the thin starting layer to the top waterproof layer to keep it dry. We live in Chicago and do not need to buy any special clothing we don't use here. However, if you live in a warm climate, you may need to invest in some key clothing and start-up items. Warm dry feet and hands are essential to enjoy the outdoors. If you are going out for a long time, buying inserts for your hands and feet is a great way to do it.
  • Keep hydrated. Despite the large amount of snow surrounding the climate, it is strangely dry. Be sure to carry water with you. Most places have a water bottle filling station we like, so bring a water bottle.
  • Plan extra time. The winter weather in Yellowstone country may be unpredictable. When driving, have enough time to drive safely. It also takes time to put on (and take off) all of these extra clothes, so the pit stops longer than you expected.
  • See your steps. Footwear is the key to exploring the park safely. Make sure you have excellent winter hiking boots that provide good grip. Again, the extra time moving slowly, walking like a penguin can help you stay safe and sound.
  • The park is partially open. Don't expect to see the entire park. Due to snowfall in Montana and snowfall in Wyoming, only certain parts and roads are open in winter. Be sure to check out the Yellowstone National Park website for updates and closes.

None of these things should stop you from going to Yellowstone in the winter. They are just things to watch out for and help you plan.
