Three YHA properties across the country receive eco-tourism certification

Three YHA properties have received Sustainable Tourism certification from Ecotourism Australia.

YHA Sydney Harbor, YHA Port Elliot Beach House and YHA Adelaide Central have been certified for their strong commitment to the environment, socio-economic, cultural and responsible management practices.

YHA Australia chief executive Paul McGrath said the three certifications demonstrated the company's commitment to environmental stewardship and community support.

“This certification not only differentiates us in a highly competitive market, but also improves our operational efficiency,” he said.

“Our inclusion in the Green Travel Guide further enhances our visibility and reputation as a leader in sustainable accommodation. Our partnership with Ecotourism Australia is a win-win situation, with sustainable tourism being the biggest winner.” said

Ecotourism Australia CEO Elissa Keenan congratulated YHA hotels on their sustainability efforts.

“Each hotel has truly embraced sustainability principles and shown real leadership in reducing their environmental footprint and creating a positive social impact,” she said.

“We look forward to continuing to support YHA as they aim to certify all 19 properties they own and operate within the next 12 months.”

Ecotourism Australia's certification process includes more than 200 key criteria across the four pillars of sustainable development and strong business practices. Obtaining certification can take up to 12 months and includes an independent third-party audit.

YHA's initiatives include the Big Dig Archaeological Education Center at YHA Sydney Harbour, which provides school children with the opportunity to study at Australia's largest urban archaeological site. YHA Adelaide Central hosts 'Feel Good Fridays', offering pancakes in exchange for gold coin donations, with all proceeds supporting Hutt Street Centre, helping Adelaide's homeless The homecoming community, while YHA Port Elliot participates in Earth Hour and Clean Up Australia Day each year and hosts its own events.
