About a year later, with the wreckage of my last relationship in my rearview mirror, this wonderful Crystal Cruise felt transformative.
This was the early 1990s, a few years before the mid-1970s revival. Back then, disco was uncool, a relic of fifteen years ago.
But I bought a disco set at a local music park on a whim and loved it. I became an aficionado, particularly of the musical genre I like to call “sunset disco,” a mellow, slightly slower-paced collection that evokes the serenity of the golden hour. It was an era of heroines—Donna Summer, Yvonne Elliman, Vicki Sue Robinson, and many others crowded my Collection – but there is one undisputed winner (in my opinion): Gloria Gaynor. I'm a true fan. As I get older and read more history, I start to realize what a shining light the disco era was. In the 1970s, the United States was demoralized and oppressed, with war, political scandals, economic recession, and fuel crises devastating its people. Disco remained a form of escape from the morass until the cultural moment shifted toward the end of the century. By 1980, disco was considered too “urban” (ie: too racial and too gay), and interest waned.
But not for me. I'd been holding on to Gloria Gaynor's records for years, and when I found out she was starring on the East Coast luxury cruise ship Crystal, I knew I had to go.

The company reopened in 2023 with new owners refurbishing two of the company's ocean-going vessels, Crystal Serenity and crystal symphony, From top to bottom. Perhaps the most luxurious aspect of both ships is the space – they offer plenty of public space for the number of passengers they carry, meaning even when they're fully engaged, it can feel half-full.
This 13-night fall cruise from Quebec City, Quebec to Fort Lauderdale was not fully booked and felt very secluded. We spent the night in ports in Quebec City, Boston, New York, and Jacksonville, giving us plenty of time to explore the ports (I had dinner with friends in Boston and New York).
The service on the boat was also great. Each room type at Crystal Hotel offers butler service, which varies depending on the room type booked. In my spacious Sapphire Balcony Suite, butlers would pack and unpack luggage, provide room service throughout the day, and handle laundry and dry cleaning—a certain amount of which is included in the cruise fare for that category. My biggest concern these two weeks was trying not to overuse the box of handmade chocolate truffles on the table as they were constantly replenishing it.
On my first night out of Quebec City, my friend nudged me through a sushi course at Umi Uma, Crystal’s award-winning Nobu Matsuhisa specialty restaurant (a certain number of specialty restaurant visits are included in the ticket price; additional visits are available for a nominal fee) . “That's Gloria,” she whispered. It was a big night on the Nova Scotia coast as the fleet packed into the main showroom for the concert. Gloria, dazzling in a silver sequined draped jumpsuit, brought her ten-piece band and backing singers, who were spinning through her hit singles. Of course, that last number is the one we've been waiting for. When Gloria sang the opening notes, I realized I hadn't heard this song in a while, but everyone in the room knew the song and was singing along. I started thinking about the wreckage of my last relationship fading in the rearview mirror and feeling the real resonance of the music in my chest. Wow, I thought, this song sounds completely different now than it did when you were 15 and lip syncing in your garage.
It was one of those life-affirming moments, and it got even better the next day during a Q&A with Gloria. She told us the story of how she got a box of records in which I will Survive It was on the B-side (the back of the record) and she took them to a friend who worked at Studio 54 and she quickly discovered that putting the song on would fill the dance floor – she said it was “hard to find new” Yorkies to do Thing–they don't just dance. “

Beyond the inside story I will SurviveGaynor also shared a particularly touching story about the first time her mother made her sing. Her mother was a professional singer, but Gaynor recalls that moment with pride, “Look, I had no idea she knew I could sing.” She also spoke of her faith, her devotion to children with absent fathers philanthropic support, and her degree in psychology.
When the floor opens with questions, there's usually a barrage of questions that aren't really questions, but it's hard to mind since a lot of the testimonials come from women who say they've been in love. I will Survive——This is their source of hope and strength in difficult times.
Sometimes the song is featured in the regular program of the evening entertainment, such as Crystal's famous White Nights, where everyone dresses in white and enjoys music and dancing in the main atrium, along with special white cocktails and desserts. I imagine it must seem a little surreal to hear your own hits when you're out in the “wild.” I was right – I followed Gloria on Instagram and saw a story where she was amused that one of her songs was used as boarding music on an Air France flight.
The rest of the cruise was memorable – fine dining that was decidedly “not cruise food” and more exhilarating moments like pulling into New York Harbor in the late afternoon (most cruise ships arrive in the early morning, so you're early Just get up and see the Statue of Liberty) and wander around Boston’s North End looking for their famous giant cannoli mike's pastries.
And, I'm happy to report that I survived my disembarkation in Fort Lauderdale without being shipwrecked over chocolate truffles.
