Wellness tourism is becoming one of the fastest growing areas in tourism. So, what exactly is it? Essentially, it is defined by each person's personal pursuit of happiness through travel. One size does not fit all and its meaning is as unique as each person’s fingerprint. As an acupuncturist, I often travel to explore health. I love sharing this with my patients and readers. So read on to discover these affordable and healthy travel ideas.
health tourism Or wellness tourism has something for everyone, catering to every budget and personal need. Many tourism marketing campaigns promote and limit wellness tourism to the exclusive perks of luxury resorts/spas. If it is truly about health, then investing in a program that is aligned with the well-being of Mother Earth is crucial. Will the trip lead to overtourism? Is this a sustainable trip for our environment? Can everyone use it?
If it's just about out-of-touch luxury spas, yoga poses on Instagram, or who looks best in Lululemon, then maybe it's time to reevaluate. Travel is an opportunity to realign your life to improve your well-being and that of the planet. Overall, it’s holistic for body, mind, and soul.
The essence of travel is healing.

Travel allows us to escape the constraints of daily life, relieves stress, stimulates creativity, and even benefits brain health. What's more, you don't need to travel far and spend a lot of money for a healing adventure. A road trip, a day at the beach, or a walk in the woods can work wonders.
Here are some synonyms to get you started, such as journey, trip, voyage, pilgrimage, odyssey, safari, road trip or adventure. These words give those of us who love to travel the chills. Understanding these concepts is the first step to healing and recharging.
“It is better to travel well than to arrive at your destination.” -Buddha
As mentioned before, wellness travel is defined by the individual. Here are some ideas to consider, but you can be the judge. Since so many articles focus on wellness travel at expensive resorts/spas or retreats, I'm sharing any thoughts, but nothing else.
nature get away!
Nature is the most accessible and free healing spa on Mother Earth. It brings us back to our true selves and maintains balance. Especially, if one lives in a city, daily contact with nature is essential. Nature is the essence of connection, yet many people overlook this when online. Unplug from the internet and think green, not screens.

land nature
forest, mountain or desert
forest bathing Or come to jade in person is a Japanese concept of purifying our energy by spending time in trees. In a forest, you can live in symbiosis with trees: receiving their oxygen and supplying them with carbon dioxide. This reciprocity is the focus of true meditation. It only takes a day or even a few hours to allow your body to return to parasympathetic mode, allowing for relaxation and a more positive reset.

Ideas about terrestrial nature are endless, depending on your interests. Camping, hiking or climbing brings you back to the basics and essence of life. Maybe, you experienced a cold, wet winter. Well, the desert may be a treatment option. When I was in Antigua, Guatemala, I stayed in a treehouse on an avocado farm. It's restorative and super grounding.
water nature
River, lake, ocean, waterfall or hot spring
Ever wonder why you feel so energized and relaxed whenever you spend a day at the beach? Moving water, such as waterfalls and waves, produces negative ions, which create a biochemical reaction in the body that increases serotonin levels, thereby activating the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). This can boost our mood and reduce stress and depression. If you don’t have a lot of time, even just one day can make a world of difference.
The natural breakthrough ideas for water are endless. Get creative with what you need and what’s available now. What floats your boat here, fishing, rafting, hiking to waterfalls, camping along the river? These boost ions and serotonin, bringing a sense of grounded well-being. You can even opt for a wellness cruise to enjoy spa treatments, fresh air and a holiday at sea.
Volunteering
Affordable and healthy travel ideas
Sometimes, stepping out of our bubble and immersing ourselves in reality to help others is the best therapy. There are many ways to volunteer with a nonprofit and make the world a better place, such as: work outside the home, Peace Corps or grassroots Volunteering. Or maybe you just need to volunteer locally. One of my most profound travel experiences was spending three months as an acupuncture volunteer in Nepal Acupuncture relief project.

Self-care when traveling alone
Perhaps self-care is the essence of solo travel. Being independent in the unknown gives us the opportunity 24/7 to live, laugh, love and cry to the fullest. Unique environments remove us from our daily lives and allow us to re-experience ourselves. This is the seed of growth that ignites the fire of self-care. Remember, gaining self-awareness is all about self-care.
What's more, you can plan any type of retreat you want, along with your own sleep and eating plans to fully nourish your body, mind, and soul. Traveling alone is a great opportunity to nurture yourself and listen to your needs.

pilgrimage
Affordable and healthy travel ideas
Simply put, a pilgrimage is a journey to a holy place. Essentially, it happens internally and externally at the same time. That sacred place is the source of your intention or journey. So, once again, the options are limitless to suit your individual needs. People have been walking the Camino de St. James or Camino de Santiago in Spain since the Middle Ages. Recently, I visited the Shrine of St. Anne of Beaupre. It is the oldest pilgrimage site in North America. Located near Quebec City, Canada, this cathedral is famous for its miracles of healing for pilgrims.

Again, you can design your own pilgrimage based on your personal pursuits or intentions. Pilgrimage can actually be traveling to a holy place for your spiritual or healing reasons. Additionally, pilgrimages can mark important rites of passage in our lives. The idea of pilgrimage includes ancestral heritage connections. Other options include pivotal life moments such as a breakup or divorce, college or high school graduation, menopause or even an empty nest.

retreat
Affordable and healthy travel ideas

Retreats offer a place to escape or rejuvenate. This is where you think outside the box. What do you really need? If it's loneliness, please respect that. Spending time alone or traveling alone is the ultimate way to connect with your true self and soul. Do you need a cabin in the woods, a bungalow on the beach or a hike to the top of a mountain.
Perhaps, you need to get inspiration from others through art or meditation. A Vipassana meditation retreat involves a formal Buddhist ritual of giving up talking and engaging in an inner meditation practice. Various retreats nurture your creativity through art, painting, yoga or writing.
