Week 6: October 21-27
Things are still lively in the Catskills. The weather was perfect, no big storms, and there were still lots of leaves on the trees.
If you haven't made it to the Catskills yet, now is the time to show up. Fall foliage continues to spread to lower elevations, so there's still plenty of color to see.

Week 5: October 14-20
The highs and lows continue this week. For most people who aren’t keen on hiking, there’s still plenty of fall foliage to see, and there’s even more beauty to come. The weather is looking great this weekend and into next week.
This is what I call mottling: some tree species are much further apart than others…
Up high, things definitely get sparser. I took more photos while hiking this weekend.

Week 4: October 7-13
On Saturday, I walked along the street Ashoka Railway Trailone of the Catskills’ gems. beautiful scenery samuels point and bales mountains.
As you can see in these photos, low down, the fall foliage in the Catskills is just beginning to turn. The eastern cliffs also remain green.
Up high, near the top, things get further out. No matter where they hike, mountain hikers can enjoy a wonderful fall foliage experience in the Catskills.
If the weather cooperates and the leaves don't blow off the trees, we may have two more great weekends in October. stay tuned…

Week 3: September 30 to October 6
Heading into week three, we expect the fall foliage to increase in intensity. Over the next two weekends, foliage will be at its peak across the region.
On Saturday, October 5, I hiked Catskill Peak 6, a long hike through some of the most remote and difficult peaks in the Catskills. The autumn leaves are here, high up! Looking down, things are still pretty green. But over the next two weeks, all elevations in the Catskills and Adirondacks will see stunning fall foliage.

On Thursday, October 3, I drove by the Catskill Escarpments, where the scenery was still green. However, some autumn leaves are starting to appear high up there…
NOTE: This area is always one of the last areas turned in in the Catskills. Fall foliage here is definitely further away (in a scattered way) than almost anywhere else.
On Tuesday, October 1st, I took a walk around Cairo, NY. On the ground level where most people will stay, everything is still green…
Up high, however, change is definitely coming. The tops of the Catskill Eastern Escarpment Mountains look beautiful and rusty…
notes: Be aware of any storms that may blow through the area and get here before they do. Once the leaves dry out, even a quick storm can strip the trees of much of their fall color. Praying there won't be any storms over the next 2-3 weekends.

Week 2: September 23-29
I walked the Indian Ladder Trail and Escarpment Trails at Thacher State Park on Sunday, September 29th – trail guide coming soon! The leaves are definitely warming up now and I predict the weekend of October 5th and October 6th will be the start of peak fall foliage season in the Hudson Valley…
At this moment, the green is filled with small pieces of gold…
In other areas, the leaves are positioned slightly further away. Conditions in the Catskills are mixed, but clearly on the way. The Adirondacks are heating up, too. The next two weeks will bring the highlight.

Week 1: September 16-22
here we go! thing might be a small Ahead of last fall's foliage changes. But I’m still in no rush to go to the mountains…
On Saturday, September 21, I headed out to the Adirondacks for two great hikes: hurricane mountain and a local hill. Similar to fall foliage in the Catskills, fall foliage in the Adirondacks is just beginning…
By the way, my original plan for the day was to head from Loj to Kolden Mountain, but the parking lot was full and even the roadside parking was a mile long. The person at the door said the parking lot is now full at 7, 6 or even 5:30 in the morning, especially on weekends. Leaf viewing season is here.
Interestingly, on the way in, the other trailheads along Route 73 are no Full – but Loj is the largest hub in ADK and has some of the most incredible hikes in the area; it's basically the Schiphol of the Adirondacks.
The photo below was taken on Sunday, September 15, 2024 from the summit of Windham Peak. On mountain tops, for obvious reasons, the leaves turn earlier than lower down…

When is the best time to see maple leaves in New York?
The foliage in the Catskills usually begins to peak in late September and usually lasts until the last week of October. However, conditions vary from year to year – so keep an eye on this page for the latest information and photos.
When can you see fall colors in upstate New York?
Late September and early October.
Are there leaves in the Catskills in October?
Absolutely. The first two weeks of October are usually a pretty good bet. Sometimes we get lucky and the leaves stay on the trees all month. Every year is different.
How long will the defoliation last in the Catskills/Adirondacks?
In 2021, it ends around the end of October.
In 2022, the show is pretty much over through October 25th—but if you know where to look, you can still see stunning foliage in some magical places.
In 2023, it will also last until near the end of the month.
